Saving Poppy 📚

I am going to give you a sneak peek into the main character of my first novel Saving Poppy and how I created her. I loved the process of getting to peice her together like a beautiful puzzle.

I feel a close bond to her. I think it's because she is the first character I have ever developed and I relate to her on a level that is hard to explain because I have no words strong enough to convey it properly.

When I started this novel I had in my mind the type of book it would be but it kind of developed into something different. I felt the words and story line flow through me to my laptop screen.  Almost like the I was just there to type it out. My original plan was for it to be a contemporary romance of the enemies to lovers sorts but it turned into a new adult fiction book that is very dark with lightness and love in the undertones. That is hinted in there but I don't really dive into the romance part of this book instead I tell the sad story of Poppy's life as she navigates her senior year of high school. She finds love in many ways throughout this novel but she also finds happiness. The protagonist is always around waiting and when things seem to be going to well for her, that person appears and bring darkness upon her once again.

She has lived a hard life but with the people that she has surrounding her at her worst are the ones that in my opinion you can't help but love. I wanted to surround her with people that love unconditionally and will never leave her. Their faith that she can be safe is never unwavering as her life brings stress and hardship to theirs. It is important for me to let you picture her for yourself as well as everyone else so I give broad descriptions and mainly focused on who she was verses what she looks like.

Creating her was one of the easiest things I have done. I had a notebook and started to write down ideas of who I wanted my characters to be. Her name was easy I always knew that my first main character was going to be named Poppy.

I had trouble trying to figure out who I wanted her to be and who I wanted her to grow to become so I just kept googling and learning how to build a character. All that googling I ended up looking into what the meaning and symbolism of poppies and what the color red stood for. As I read and made list of all this information I was like these are all things I wanted her to be and grow into.

I then made another list separating them into columns (one was for who she is now and who she would grow into as the story unfolds.)

As I was writing it naturally formed in hints and if you look closely I use my research throughout the book. I made the color red and important factor in her life and what her name represents.

This book is graphic in senses of hurt, trauma, abuse, and violence but there is glimmers of hope, love, and happiness throughout. I know this book will not be for everyone but for those that do read it, my hopes are that you love Poppy and that this book is one that can draw you in. despite all the darkness there is a beauty under it all and makes me think that even in our worst times we are capable of being loved but we are also able to love not only others but ourselves.

I don't know when I will publish this book but when I do I will know that it is a project that I love and I am very proud of. I will post up dates on here as well as my author instagram page @jennfierfrohbooks if you would like to follow
